Here's where you can find us, look for "Murphy" roughly in the center of the map... Murphy will stay roughly in the center of the map unless you use one of the directional arrows to scroll away from us, or you can use the hand pointer and drag the map around in the window. Cherokee County, North Carolina!In March, 2009, I decided that I just don't have the time and energy to do everything I started with this website. As a result, I'm in the process of refocusing my efforts and rebuilding this site. Instead of trying to focus on all of Cherokee County, I will focus on Murphy, NC, primarily. For some events, I may link to things in Andrews, at the Folk School, or elsewhere in the county, but the focus will be on Murphy and the people who live here. A Little About Cherokee County, NCCherokee County is located in the southwestern corner of North Carolina on the main road between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Asheville, North Carolina, approximately equidistant between the two. Also, approximately the same distance from us, lie Knoxville, Tennessee to our northwest; Atlanta, Georgia to our south; and Greenville, South Carolina, to our southeast. We are about 100 miles, more or less, away from these cities. Cherokee County is a land of scenic splendor with many rivers, streams, lakes, and forested mountains that are green in the spring and summer and burst into glorious color in the fall. The Valley River, which flows southeast through Andrews and passes on the east side of Murphy, joins the Hiwassee River, which flows northwest from near Brasstown and passes on the west side of Murphy. Both rivers come together on the north edge of Murphy and flow together into Lake Hiwassee. The Nottely River flows north from Georgia into Lake Hiwassee, which flows into Apalachia Lake, and from there the Hiwassee River continues into the Tennessee River Valley on its way to the Gulf of Mexico. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission maintains a number of boating access areas in the western mountains of North Carolina, including several in Cherokee County. Lake Hiwassee, also known as Hiwassee Reservoir, offers a variety of outdoor recreational activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and camping. We enjoy moderate weather which is conducive to enjoying many outdoor activties. The air is crisp and clean and our towns still have the charm of small town America. We have two incorporated towns in Cherokee County: Murphy, the county seat, and Andrews. Towns with post offices include:

In Cherokee County, you can find many ways to fill your time with beauty, recreation, and fun. You can enjoy holiday and seasonal festivities in our small towns. Our towns are surrounded by great fishing, hunting, golf, whitewater adventures, hiking, and many other activities to complete your outdoor adventure vacation. The Ocoee River lies to our west and the Nantahala River to our east. Both offer outstanding whitewater adventures with the Ocoee River being the more challenging of the two. We are in the mountains of western North Carolina and it's only about an hour's drive to the North Carolina, or southern, side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The entrance to the park, and the lower end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, are located near the Cherokee Indian Reservation (also known as the Qualla Boundary), which surrounds the town of Cherokee, NC. Another town with access to southwestern parts of the park is Bryson City, NC. Many people, when they think of the Smoky Mountains, think of the Tennessee, or northern, side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which also features many things to do in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. In Cherokee County, you will also find theaters, antique shops, craft shows, flea markets and festivals. We have plenty of restaurants, lodging accommodations, recreational activities, churches, shopping, and historical points of interest for you and your family to enjoy.
