Celebrate the rich heritage of Appalachia at the 35th annual Fall Festival, featuring over 200 juried and non-juried craftspeople. Handcrafted items for sale include jewelry, woodturning, pottery, weaving, ironwork, photography, rugs, woodcarvings, furniture, paintings, baskets, and much, much more.

Live music and dance on two stages, great food, craft demonstrations, and children’s activities are just a few more reasons why Fall Festival at John C. Campbell Folk School is one of the most popular events in the area.

About the Folk School

Founded in 1925, the Folk School strives to bring folks together in a creative, supportive environment. We offer over 850 classes each year in traditional and contemporary craft, art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, writing, nature studies, and photography. The John C. Campbell Folk School is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

More than 200 one-of-a-kind handcrafted items have been donated by instructors, students, and Folk School supporters, and will be up for bid this Saturday, August 16 at the annual Benefit Auction.

Donations include something from almost every discipline taught at the Folk School, including pottery, ironwork, basketry, wood items, dolls, paintings, weavings, rugs, jewelry, furniture and more. All Auction proceeds will benefit the Folk School’s craft programs.

2 - 5 p.m. - Live Auction with Tim Ryan & Bob Grove

A lunch buffet will be served at noon in the Folk School’s Dining Hall. Reservations are required for lunch and space is limited. Cost for the lunch is $12.00 per person.

Gov. Mike Easley announced that the official, free, 2008 North Carolina Travel Guide is available.

The new guide includes a special pull-out map of the state and details on activities that can be shared by the entire family, grandkids to grandparents.

A wild game supper will be held at 6:00 pm on Thursday, January 24, 2008, at the Andrews Community Building, sponsored by First Assembly Sportsmen.

The event, which consists of a full meal (bear, deer, rabbit, hog, trout, and more) with drink and dessert, is for guys only, and boys should be accompanied by an adult.

Admission is free.

There will be door prizes.

The Cherokee County Health Department will hold a four-week program on why it is necessary to eat well and how to eat well even when one is suffering from a chronic illness or other medical condition.

The workshop will meet at the Penland Senior Center on Alpine Street in Murphy, NC, from 10:30 am until 11:30 am beginning on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, and continuing on January 29, February 5, and February 12.

Everyone is invited. There is no cost.

A Breast and Cervical cancer clinic is available at the Cherokee County Health Department, 228 Hilton Street, Murphy, NC 28906.

Women, age 50 and older, may call Kim McPherson, coordinator, at 828-837-7486, ext. 218, to see if they are eligible for a free or low-cost breast exam and mammogram.

The Cherokee County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and the Office of Economic Opportunity of Catholic Social Services are sponsoring a free financial fitness workshop on Tuesday, January 22, 2008.

The workshop will be held from 11:00 am until 7:00 pm at the Hiwassee Valley Pool and Wellness Center in Murphy, NC.

The first 25 people to register for the workshop will receive a free dinner, too.

The event will include topics on budgeting, holiday debt, and tips for the upcoming tax season.

Professionals from the community will present information and strategies for financial management. A credit counselor also will be available to answer questions.

This is a good opportunity for all who have concerns about their financial situation or who would like to get the new year started on a positive track with planning and budgeting.
