Jan Davidson Receives North Carolina’s Top Honor - Brasstown, NC 28902

John C. Campbell Folk School Director Jan Davidson received the 2007 North Carolina Award for Fine Arts in November 2007.

The North Carolina Award is the highest civilian honor the state can bestow. Jan Davidson has been the director of the Folk School since 1992 and the school has gone through a period of revitalization largely because of his leadership, vision and hard work.

“These awards are our most prestigious civilian honor and are given to those North Carolinians whose contributions to the state are enduring and truly significant,” said North Carolina Governor Mike Easley. “We are fortunate to live in a state with so many outstanding individuals who, through their leadership, their talents and their time, have helped make North Carolina a better place to live.”

Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting - Murphy, NC 28906 - January 17, 2008

The Cherokee County NC Chamber of Commerce will hold its 38th annual Dinner Meeting and third Awards Night on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at The Millrace Farm Banquet Hall off Hendrix Road in Murphy, NC.

Lee Ebert, president and CEO of the North Carolina State Chamber of Commerce, will be the keynote speaker.

Social hour is from 5:00 PM through 6:00 PM, with dinner following at 6:00. Music will be provided by John C. Campbell Folk School players.

The dinner is being catered by The Longhouse Restaurant.

Tickets are $30 per person.

The Cherokee Scout Wins Eight Awards In Advertising Contest - Murphy, NC 28906

According to an article in the June 13, 2007, edition of The Cherokee Scout, the newspaper set a new record by winning eight awards in the 2007 NC Press Association Advertising Contest.

The Cherokee Scout has been Cherokee County’s local newspaper since 1889.

The eight awards, including four first-place awards in several categories, were twice as many as the Scout has won before in Division B. Only one newspaper in the division won more awards than the Cherokee Scout.

(As quoted in the newspaper,) “This is a tremendous accomplishment for our team of creative graphic artists and advertising sales associates,” said David Brown, publisher of the Cherokee Scout. “I’ve always known they were more than capable of first-class work, and it’s nice to see that also appreciated by their peers in the newspaper industry. I’m very proud of all of them.”

Congratulations to all the sales associates and graphic artists who won awards.

Investigator Roger Williams Earns Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate - Murphy, NC 28906

Investigator Roger Williams of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was awarded the Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate by the NC Sheriff’s Education and Training Commission on March 13, 2007.

The NC Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission was established in September 1983. Its purpose is to upgrade the capabilities, competence, and proficiency of sheriffs’ departmental personnel through program, standards, and procedures involving employment, improvement, career development, and retention of the sheriffs’ office personnel.

The NC Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission maintains certification files on more than 20,000 deputy sheriffs, detention officers, and telecommunicators.

The purpose of the Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate is to recognize the level of competence of sheriffs and deputy sheriffs serving NC sheriff’s offices, to foster increased interest in college education and professional law enforcement training, and to attract highly qualified individuals into a law enforcement career.

The Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate is the highest professional certificate awarded to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs in North Carolina. To qualify for the certificate, sheriffs and deputy sheriffs must complete a combination of professional training and relevant education, as well as meet minimum experience requirements.

Murphy Mountain Realty wins award - Murphy, NC 28906

In recognition of outstanding sales achievement in 2006, United Country - Murphy Mountain Realty has been presented with the company’s President’s Honor Group award.

United Country also honored two Murphy Mountain Realty sales associates for their individual sales accomplishments in 2006. Michael Beeri and Brenda Crisp both earned the Pinnacle Club award.

Fame Conley named 2006 advertising All-Star - Murphy, NC 28906

Fame Conley, a sales associate at the Cherokee Scout for over two years, was named an advertising All-Star during Community Newspaper Inc.’s annual advertising meeting on March 9, 2007.

She also helped the Cherokee Scout earn first place for Increase in Display Ads.

Of the 30 newspapers in CNI, only eight sales associates received All-Star recognition for 2006, and two of them were from the Murphy Region.
