Sandra Clutton of Coldwell Banker Ervin and Associates has returned from Knoxville, Tennessee, where she completed a highly specialized course in residential real estate buyer sales strategies conducted by the Council of Residential Specialists of the National Association of Realtors.

This course is one in a series of professional education sequences required to qualify for the coveted Certified Residential Specialist designation.

"The growing importance of negotiation as well as sales strategies in today's residential real estate market were addressed by the instructor in this course," Clutton said. Bear Ridge Mall Grand Opening Activities - Andrews, NC 28901 - June 16, 2007

Bear Ridge Mall will hold their Grand Opening today in Andrews, North Carolina.

There will be lots of activities, music, food, and shopping for the entire family.

Every 30 minutes there will be a drawing for a free item or a discounted item. Every hour there will be a cash giveaway.

At 5:00 pm, the mall will hold the "Big Bear" big cash giveaway and you must be present to win this prize.

The event starts at 10:00 am.

At 11:00 am, there will be a peanut drop.

12:15 pm brings the Flag Ceremony with the VFW, Color Guard, US Marine Corps League, and the Boy Scouts. There will be a display of military uniforms from the Civil War era to the present. If you have any old, worn American flags, the US Marine Corps League will help you dispose of them properly.

All day long, you will find great shopping, arts and crafts, kids bounce house, face painting, balloons, games, magician and clown. Enjoy the pony and wagon rides.

The Cherokee Scout Wins Eight Awards In Advertising Contest - Murphy, NC 28906

According to an article in the June 13, 2007, edition of The Cherokee Scout, the newspaper set a new record by winning eight awards in the 2007 NC Press Association Advertising Contest.

The Cherokee Scout has been Cherokee County's local newspaper since 1889.

The eight awards, including four first-place awards in several categories, were twice as many as the Scout has won before in Division B. Only one newspaper in the division won more awards than the Cherokee Scout.

(As quoted in the newspaper,) "This is a tremendous accomplishment for our team of creative graphic artists and advertising sales associates," said David Brown, publisher of the Cherokee Scout. "I've always known they were more than capable of first-class work, and it's nice to see that also appreciated by their peers in the newspaper industry. I'm very proud of all of them."

JuBELLation Handbell Choir Presents Free Concert - Murphy, NC 28906 - June 21, 2007

JuBELLation, a youth handbell choir from Portland, Oregon, will perform in a free concert Thursday, June 21, 2007, at St. William Catholic Church in Murphy, North Carolina.

Karin McDonough, musical director, said, "With its sound and energy, JuBELLation is prepared to take its audience on a remarkable musical journey."

The group will perform music written specifically for handbell choirs as well as arrangements of familiar tunes.

JuBELLation formed at First United Methodist Church in Portland in 1998, and, nine years later, many of the ringers in the group will graduate this year from high school. In celebration of this passage, the handbell choir is touring in North Carolina and Tennessee on their way to a handbell festival in Chattanooga.

Brasstown Ringers and Mountain Area Performing Arts Association are local sponsors of the event.

The concert will begin at 7:30 pm Thursday, June 21, 2007, at St. William Catholic Church on Andrews Road in Murphy.

Admission is free and no reservations are required.

A free-will offering will be taken to defray the costs of the tour.

US Marine Corps League Cherokee Detachment 1011, Murphy, will have its annual Flag Day celebration from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Bear Ridge Mall in Andrews, North Carolina.

Activities will include family entertainment, Boy Scouts American Flag ceremony, food, flag education, and military memorabilia display.

Anyone who has an old worn American flag that needs to be retired may bring it to the Marine Corps League receptacle for proper disposal.

The fourth annual Poker Run to benefit Children's Miracle Network will begin with registration at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Cherokee County Cycles in Andrews, North Carolina.

Riders will travel to Robbinsville, through the Nantahala Gorge, and end at Wal-Mart in Murphy, NC.

Food, drink, and entertainment will be available about 3:00 pm at Wal-Mart.

Cost is $20 for riders and $10 for passengers.

Prizes will be awarded for the Best Poker Hand and the Worst Poker Hand. Wildcards are $10 each.

Cherokee County Cycles and Wal-Mart will donate numerous prizes.

All riders are welcome and everyone is invited to join the activities following the run.

Investigator Roger Williams Earns Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate - Murphy, NC 28906

Investigator Roger Williams of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office was awarded the Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate by the NC Sheriff's Education and Training Commission on March 13, 2007.

The NC Sheriff's Education and Training Standards Commission was established in September 1983. Its purpose is to upgrade the capabilities, competence, and proficiency of sheriffs' departmental personnel through program, standards, and procedures involving employment, improvement, career development, and retention of the sheriffs' office personnel.

The NC Sheriff's Education and Training Standards Commission maintains certification files on more than 20,000 deputy sheriffs, detention officers, and telecommunicators.

The purpose of the Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate is to recognize the level of competence of sheriffs and deputy sheriffs serving NC sheriff's offices, to foster increased interest in college education and professional law enforcement training, and to attract highly qualified individuals into a law enforcement career.

The Advanced Deputy Professional Law Enforcement Certificate is the highest professional certificate awarded to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs in North Carolina. To qualify for the certificate, sheriffs and deputy sheriffs must complete a combination of professional training and relevant education, as well as meet minimum experience requirements.

David Anderson, a native of Brasstown, plays guitar and sings a wide variety of folk and country songs. He was featured in the Folk School’s award winning Mountain Valley Music collection both as a solo artist and with The Three Shades of Bluegrass.

Hunt Smith settled in Brasstown a few years ago and has sung and played guitar and mandolin for years in clubs and coffee houses and at the Folk School's Fall Festival.

David and Hunt have been playing together informally for several years, but this will be a rare public concert by these two talented musicians.
