Diane West: Outstanding Math Teacher for 2005 -- Marble, NC 28905

Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, November 26 2005 at 3:43 AM

(Context Tag: Marble NC, Marble Elementary School, mathematics, outstanding teacher)

Diane West, fourth grade teacher at Marble Elementary School, has been honored as Cherokee County Schools' Outstanding Elementary School Mathematics Teacher for 2005.

This honor was made public in a statewide recognition on October 13 and 14, 2005. West and colleague, Breeze Bettis, third-grade teacher, participated in the 35th annual N. C. Council of Teachers of Math at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, where West was presented with her award.

West, originally from Andrews, NC, began her school years in a tiny one-room school in New York, where she had "the same wonderful teacher" for grades one through part of the fourth grade, she said. During the fourth grade, her family moved near Boston.

"There were more students in my new school than there was in the little town where we used to live," West said.

After a few years, her family moved back to Andrews, where she attended grades 8-12.

West received her bachelor's degree and master's in education from Western Carolina University. She began teaching in 1972 at Haywood County, where she taught eighth-grade math and reading. Later, she taught fourth-graders and became a reading program developer for grades K-5.

She returned to Cherokee County in 1981, where she taught in the classroom at Peachtree Elementary for grades three and four for several years, and then taught math for grades five through eight.

West came to Marble Elementary to teach the fourth grade when her son started kindergarten.

"Of all the grades I have taught, my favorite is the fourth grade," West said.

United Way honors community volunteers -- Cherokee County and Clay County, NC

Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, November 26 2005 at 2:55 AM

(Context Tag: Cherokee County NC, Clay County NC, United Way, volunteers)

More than 40 volunteers from 17 Cherokee County social service agencies were honored recently by the United Way of Cherokee and Clay Counties.

About 90 people attended the volunteer recognition event at First United Methodist Church. The theme was "Volunteers -- the Heart of a Community."

Murphy Mayor Bill Hughes expressed his thanks to volunteers, saying that hundreds of volunteers contribute thousands of hours to helping people in the community and to making this community a good place to live. But it is not just the time they give and the knowledge and skills they share, he said, it is their caring that makes a difference.

Laura Hays, a Special Olympics athlete and 2003-2004 honorary chairperson for United Way's fundraising campaign, also thanked the volunteers.

"Lots of volunteers help with Special Olympics in Cherokee County," she said, "They coach us and drive us places and cheer us on."

Special Olympics has more than 100 local volunteers.

(Learn more about Special Olympics North Carolina and volunteer online.)

Devin Tant, a 15-year-old Boy Scout who is about to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, is the 2005-2006 honorary chairperson for United Way. He expressed appreciation to the many adults who make Scouting available for youth by volunteering.

Karen Borchers, executive director of the local United Way, pointed out that many of the most vital social service agencies in Cherokee County are entirely volunteer. These include the emergency food pantries, rescue squads, home-delivered meals, and Compassionate Friends.

The service of a number of other agencies are provided almost entirely by volunteers, such as the Guardian ad Litem program, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts.

Borchers said United Way refers volunteers to local agencies.

"We have brochures about volunteering at the chamber and the libraries, and we receive inquiries from newcomers and local agencies and their particular needs," Borchers said.

Many volunteers help with several agencies. Many of those present at the event have volunteered with the same agency for 10 years or more.

The volunteers were presented with "one-of-a-kind" thank-you certificates, colored by children in the Power Partners after-school program in Andrews, NC.

Contributions to United Way are distributed to local agencies to provide services to the needy, children, families, and elderly in Cherokee and Clay counties.

Volunteers honored at the event were:

United Way's fundraising campaign is underway. This year's goal is $56,000. About 60 percent of the goal has been raised. All money raised by United Way of Cherokee and Clay Counties is used locally.

(Context Tag: Murphy NC, public library)

The Friends of Murphy Public Library held its quarterly meeting and potluck dinner on November 15, 2005, and members found more than one reason to celebrate that evening.

The new parking lot at the library was finished, the Friends of Murphy Public Library cookbooks had just arrived from the printer, and, after only a year and a half in existence, the Friends had just won the prestigious Frances B. Reid Outstanding Friends Group Award.

The parking lot's spaciousness was a luxury for the meeting. Only seven months earlier, the Friends had started raising the $20,000 needed for the parking lot construction. It was accomplished with a dedicated membership, and also with help from artists, craftspeople, and friends all over Cherokee County. The Town of Murphy and Cherokee County matched funds to make it a true community partnership.

Friends' members were able to purchase the new cookbook at the meeting. Spearheaded by Friends' treasurer Kathy Hoyt, the cookbook arrived in time for holiday gift giving. it includes more than 300 tried, true, and unique recipes from members and local cooks.

Special guest Margaret Andrews, board member of Friends of Macon County Library in Franklin, NC, and mountain area director for the state organization Friends of North Carolina Libraries, presented the award at the meeting.

The Frances B. Reid Outstanding Friends Group Award is a statewide honor that carries with it a $100 stipend and plaque. It is awarded annually by the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries to a distinguished Friends group.

Not ready to rest on their laurels, the Friends continue with their "Big Blowout Book Sale," and the Friends' cookbook is available for purchase at the Murphy library.
