(Context Tag: Cherokee County NC) Okay, conference goers! We heard you loud and clear...
Bring back Sarah and her powder puff mechanics session!
This is one of the most popular sessions we have presented at our conference, and there was a huge outcry last year because Sarah was not with us in 2004. Well, she's back now, and you can learn all her tricks of the trade! This session takes place out in the parking lot, and don't worry... Sarah is the only one who gets greasy. Join Sarah to learn tips that will save you money, and maybe even your life.
When Sarah Jones decided to become a stay-at-home mom, she found that not only could she not afford a new car, she could not even afford for a mechanic to fix the car she did have. So, she decided to return to school and become a mechanic! Sarah found that she has a real knack for diagnosing and repairing cars and trucks, and, in 2002, she graduated with honors in Automobile Technology from Tri-County Community College. She was only the second female to graduate the program in the last 10 years.
Sarah is a technician for the North Carolina Department of Transportation and enjoys the challenge of diagnosing and repairing the NC State trucks and construction equipment.
You are invited to register for the Multicultural Women's Development Conference, or call the office of One Dozen Who Care, Inc. at 828-321-2273.

Before the concert begins, the public is welcome to enjoy a public exhibition of Folk School student crafts from 6:40 - 7:00 pm. Admission is free. The Folk School Craft Shop will be open until 7:30 pm.
Sebens and Widener play a wide variety of old time and Celtic music. Both are residents of Carrol County, Virginia, at the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their music represents the spirit and drive of traditional Appalachian folk music.
Sebens brings a varied educational background to his music. From early training in classical music to experiencing teaching history and industrial arts, Sebens has melded these experiences into a love and appreciation for mountain and hammered dulcimers.
He owns and operates Meadows Music in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, where he handcrafts a variety of musical instruments, as well as keeping an active schedule of music festivals, workshops and Elderhostel courses.
His first hammered dulcimer was built from a set of plans from the Smithsonian Institution, and his designs have evolved significantly since then.
Countless hours spent with musicians and instrument makers at fiddlers conventions, jam sessions, and backporch chats have helped him refine both his building and his playing.
Widener is a master of several instruments including guitar, banjo and bouzouki. He plays guitar and banjo with the celtic band Naomi's Fancy and teaches a number of private students. His farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains places him in the heart of some of the best old-time music in the country, folk school officials said.
Upcoming concert series performers at the folk school include Mountain Fling on Friday, April 1, 2005, and Staber and Chasnoff on Friday, April 15, 2005.

Long is human resources manager at Lowe's Home Improvement. She moved to Cherokee County in December 2003, having had her own business in Atlanta for five years prior.
"We have had a second home in this area since 1998," she said. "I am delighted to be part of the community on a full-time basis now and to be part of the United Way board."
Allen, a retired banker, moved to Hayesville, NC, with his wife. In addition to 25 years of banking experience in south Florida, he served on a number of boards for non-profit social service agencies and was active with the United Way of Martin County. He chaired its fund-raising campaign in 1992.

Every United Way is separately incorporated and governed by local volunteers who know their communities, Borchers said.
The purpose of the United Way of Cherokee and Clay Counties is to raise funds to distribute to agencies providing important social services to local residents. All money stays locally.

The Cherokee County (NC) Health Department's WIC program supports National Nutritional Month for Women, Infants and Children. The National Nutrition Month campaign encourages Americans to:
- Be adventurous and expand your horizons. Variety is the "spice of life" in your food choices and is key to good nutrition and health. Choose foods based on flavor, texture and colors that are tasty and healthy. Explore the wide world of nutrition by trying a variety of foods.
- Treat taste buds. Choose foods sensibly by looking at the big picture; it's what you eat over several days, not just one meal or day that counts. So enjoy all your favorite foods, just try eating them in moderate amounts.
- Balance food choices with your lifestyle. Choosing the right balance of foods helps you get the right combination of nutrients. Balance food choices with physical activities to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
- Be active. Be creative and enjoy a variety of ways to stay active to feel your best. There's no need for expensive equipment or complicated fitness programs. Make a list of activities that fit into your lifestyle and do one daily.

"We have seen some real growth in our chapter, such that we have branch offices in Brevard, Rutherfordton, and now this one in Murphy."
The regional office is in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Since 1964, SCORE Association has provided counseling to prospective small business entrepreneurs in America. Currently known as "Counselors to America's Small Business," the national organization no longer requires its volunteer counselors to be retired, as it once did, said Ballard.
He said the primary purpose of any SCORE chapter is to provide advice and assistance to people who either want to start a new business or need help with an existing business.
"There are several ways to accomplish this goal," Ballard said. "We hold workshops, seminars, distribute appropriate literature, and inform through newspaper columns."
However, the most effective way to assist is to conduct direct counseling with the client. A fairly recent innovation in this field is email counseling.
"Thanks to this growth and our heavy involvement with email counseling, the chapter was recently named one of the top 10 email counseling chapters in the national SCORE organization."
Ballard said the Western North Carolina (WNC) chapter has also recently introduced a "team counseling" approach.
"The more historic form of counseling involves a one-on-one conference with the client, but SCORE has recently developed a new format," Ballard said. "We form our counselors into small groups of three or four and the entire group then meets with the client."
He said this method allows the client to benefit from a broader range of expertise, and also enables more counselors to become directly involved with clients without significantly increasing counselor caseload. Ballard said Judy Grove and Jerry Chautin are the local counselors, but the local group is "aggressively seeking more volunteers."
SCORE operates under the auspices of the United States Small Business Administration. So Ballard said counselors not only provide information on SBA leading programs, but also "maintain close contacts with the local banking community."
He said the new office is in the Jane Smith Patterson Building on the Tri-County Community College main campus in the Peachtree area of Cherokee County, NC.
The following people were present at the formation of the SCORE branch office at Tri-County Community College: Michael Arriola, Senior Area Manager of the U. S. Small Business Administration; Joe Hogg, Director fo the TCCC TeleCenter/Small Business Center; Judy Grove, local SCORE counselor; Richard Adams, SCORE Chapter Director; and James Ballard, Acting Murphy Branch Director.
