National Heritage Area Conference -- Western North Carolina
Posted by johndilbeck on Thursday, June 2 2005 at 10:46 PM
(Context Tag: western North Carolina) A group of regional representatives from the Far West Mountain Economic Partners attended the Balancing Nature and Commerce in the Gateway Communities of Western North Carolina leadership conference on May 3-6, 2005.
The conference was the next step in the strategic heritage development plan written last year by a committee of the Partners' Heritage Tourism team and regional representatives for the newly-designated Blue Ridge National Heritage Area.
The Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, representing 25 counties covering 10,000 square miles, was established by the United States Congress on November 10, 2003 as the nation's 24th National Heritage Area.
Far West Mountain Economic Partners, a nonprofit regional economic development organization, has been a driving force to implement the initiative in Cherokee, Clay, Graham and Swain counties, in conjunction with the Qualla Boundary.
A National Heritage Area is a place designated by Congress where natural, cultural, historic, and recreational resources combine to form a nationally distinctive landscape arising from patterns of human activity shaped by geography and traditions.
Board members, team members, and staff attending the conference included Glenn and Ann Tatum representing Andrews Chamber of Commerce, David and Kirsten Goldhagen of Goldhagen Art Glass Studios, Debbie Jackson representing Clay County NC Chamber of Commerce, Connie Southard representing Swain County Chamber of Commerce, past board president Claudie Burchfield representing Graham County Economic Development, and Partners Interim Executive Director Gwen Caeli of Cherokee County. Partners' affiliates representing the Qualla Boundary were Robert Jumper and Alicia Wildcatt with the Marketing and Promotion office of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.
The Heritage Area initiative is a primary goal of Far West Mountain Economic Partners' Heritage Tourism team to increase opportunities for artists, crafters, musicians, and businesses related to the tourism industry.
In addition to the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, other conference sponsors were The Conservation Fund, Advantage West, the Center for Regional Development at Western Carolina University, and the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
With the unique natural resources located in our mountains and national treasures such as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Appalachian Trail, conference attendees focused on strategic planning for land conservation, building civic engagement, building long-term partnerships, cultural heritage development and management, and sustainable tourism.
Far West Mountain Economic Partners is located in Andrews, NC. For membership information, contact fwpartners@verizon.net or call 828-321-2929 or toll-free at 877-321-2929.

Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People -- Peachtree Community -- June 11, 2005
Posted by johndilbeck on Thursday, June 2 2005 at 9:03 AM
(Context Tag: Murphy NC) It may seem impossible, but thousands have learned the secret of how to play piano without lots of lessons and note reading. If you've ever wondered how it's done, mark Saturday, June 11, 2005, 10:00 am on your calendar.
That's when Tri-County Community College brings Deborah Belcher in to teach her nationally-renowned Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People workshop.
Belcher's approach reveals how the pros play. A professional pianist whose performances range from classical concerts to pop and easy listening at parties, Belcher will share piano player's tricks of the trade. When asked how this method differs from her traditional teaching, Belcher replies, "While the traditional (classical) approach demands long-term discipline and precision in piano playing, this approach stresses enjoyment and getting great sounds early on. This 'pain-free' method is more suitable for pop music of all kinds, from Broadway to rhythm and blues, and even hymn-playing."
While knowing how to read treble clef is an asset, many students take the workshop with no prior musical experience. Students will learn how to use chords instead of traditional note-by-note music reading. They'll learn to use sheet music in an entirely new way that is extremely simple, and they'll discover many of the magical shortcuts the pros use to enhance their playing. After this workshop each student will know the secret of playing any pop tune with both hands using this system.
Anyone interested in taking the workshop is welcome to send for a free pamphlet on reading treble clef titled How to Read Music Notation in just 30 Minutes. Send a self-addressed, stamped number 10 envelope to: SMI, 31 Killian Road, Asheville, NC 28804.
This three-hour workshop will be held on the Murphy campus of Tri-County Community College. Fees include a registration fee of $42 and a materials fee of $25.
Pre-registration and pre-payment of the $42 registration is required.
For more information and to pre-register for this piano workshop scheduled for Saturday, June 11, 2005, call the Continuing Education Division of Tri-County Community College at 828-835-4313, or the Graham County Center at 828-479-9256.

A Portal for Cherokee County, NC Redesign Complete
Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, May 30 2005 at 7:21 PM
As you may, or may not, know, CherokeeCountyNC.com was hacked on May 10 and 12, 2005, by a very misguided person in Cairo, Egypt.
Many articles were deleted, the forum was corrupted, obscene messages were posted, and months of hard work were destroyed in only a few hours.
After researching this problem, I learned that PHP-Nuke, the content management system I'd been using to develop the site, is prone to this type of hacking attack.
I decided I had to redesign the site for long-term success. Over the next couple of weeks, I worked over 200 hours to completely rebuild the site using tools that would be much less likely to be hacked.
I apologize for the disruption and the fact that your bookmarks may no longer work for you, but, in the long run, this should be a positive development for the site and for posting information about Cherokee County, NC, and the people who live, learn, work, and play here and for those who would like to travel or move here in the future.
We have a lot to offer in Cherokee County,NC, and it is my goal to help you publicize what you are doing to a world-wide audience.
Thanks for ignoring the debris while I knocked out the walls and rebuilt everything.
Now, it's time to get back to work and catch up on the last two weeks of what has been happening here.
Thank you for visiting, and I hope you will support my sponsors who make the site possible.
All the best,
JD

Farmers sought for medicinal herb project -- North Carolina
Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, May 30 2005 at 6:40 PM
(This article was originally posted to the site on 05-17-2005 and is being reloaded because the site was hacked. Please be aware that any information in this message may be out of date because of this.)
(Context Tag: North Carolina) Farmers interested in growing medicinal herbs are being sought for a project designed to determine whether herbs can be a viable commodity on North Carolina farms.
The Medicinal Herbs for Commerce project is part of the North Carolina Specialty Crops Program, a cooperative effort of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University and the Marketing Division of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. It is based at N.C. State's Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Fletcher.
Applications are being accepted from farmers interested in participating in the second year of the project. Farmers who are selected must agree to meet with the project coordinator at their farm as necessary, maintain production records through the course of the project, keep accurate financial records and receipts for the development of budgets and be willing to host a field day for other growers and extension agents.
In return, growers will get agricultural, technical, and direct marketing assistance plus the seeds necessary to produce and market top-quality medicinal herbs. Project staff will also help growers contact buyers and market herbs. Farmers from throughout North Carolina are eligible to participate. While all types of farmers are eligible, the project is geared toward tobacco growers and developing medicinal herbs as an alternative crop for tobacco.
Thirty farmers will be selected. They must agree to grow at least an acre of herbs. Applications must be postmarked by May 15. More information and applications are available online at ncherb.org. Information is also available from Woody Woodward, project coordinator, at 828.684.3562 or woody_woodward@ncsu.edu.
The project began in March 2004 with funding from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission and the N.C. Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services. This year the project is funded by the Tobacco Trust Fund, Golden LEAF and the North Carolina Rural Center. Last year, 17 growers from 15 counties grew purple coneflower, California poppy, valerian and dandelions. The crops were chosen for their market potential and compatibility with existing tobacco cultivation equipment.
"We were looking for new crops for tobacco growers that didn't require expensive inputs and could use existing resources," explained Dr. Jeanine Davis, associate professor of horticultural science at N.C. State and North Carolina Cooperative Extension specialist. Davis is the project director and Specialty Crops Program coordinator.
"I didn't have to buy any equipment for this project," said cooperating farmer Peggy Garrett of Person County. Most growers were able to simply plug a different crop into their tried-and-true production systems.
"I had been looking for something to help me on the farm and keep me going," said Randy Ball, a participating grower from Vance County. "This project gave me the opportunity to reach out and expand [beyond tobacco]."
"It was a good thing, sort of a life saver because of the tobacco issue," Garrett added. Thus far, six growers have sold their California poppy crop (fresh and dried), five growers sold their echinacea crop, and the dandelion and valerian growers have their crops pre-sold and will ship once they are harvested.
Herb brokering and manufacturing companies including Botanical Supply, Gaia Herbs, Ridge Runner Trading Co., and Strategic Sourcing, all based in North Carolina, and Triarco Industries, of New Jersey, are an integral part of the project. They offer invaluable advice, participate in conference calls and field days and purchase herbs.

New Certified Roadside Farm Market program -- North Carolina
Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, May 30 2005 at 6:35 PM
(Context Tag: North Carolina) North Carolina farmers who operate roadside stands and primarily sell their own fruits and vegetables or their neighbors’ commodities to participate in a new program aimed at boosting sales and increasing curb appeal.
The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is beginning a new Certified Roadside Farm Market program to help consumers easily locate roadside stands selling commodities that are fresh from North Carolina farms.
“Selling directly to consumers is a great market for farmers, and allows consumers to enjoy the freshest fruits and vegetables available,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Our goal with this program is to help farmers draw even more shoppers to their stands by providing signs that clearly identify a location with North Carolina products.”
Growers who sign up to participate in the program will receive a metal “Certified Roadside Farm Market” sign to display, a marketing kit with posters and price cards to use in their displays, and suggestions on market appearance, product quality, displays and other marketing tips. In addition, participating farm markets will be listed on the NCDA&CS’ NCFarmFresh.com Web site, where consumers can search for local farms selling produce in their areas.
“Curb appeal is important in attracting potential customers, and we want to help farmers who operate their own roadside stands to maximize their exposure and draw,” Troxler said.
As part of the program, farmers must grow 51 percent of the commodities they sell. Operators are encouraged to sell other locally grown products, too. The program is free, and the Department hopes to send out signs and marketing kits by mid-May. Farmers with roadside stands can sign up at anytime.
To participate, operators will need to fill out an application form. To learn more about the program or to sign up, contact Ross Williams, assistant director of marketing, at (919) 733-7887 or e-mail him at ross.williams@ncmail.net.

(Context Tag: Murphy NC) There will be eight 4-H day camps in Cherokee County this year and youth may attend one or more of them. Each day camp will accept up to 12 youth at different age levels and costs, and they are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Registration for the 2005 4-H summer day camps has begun.

All day camps are open to youth regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.
Shannon Coleman is Cherokee County's Extension Service 4-H, Family and Consumer Education Assistant Agent, and she says, "4-H is the world's largest youth serving organization with more than 6 million participants nationally. It involves all 50 states and more than 80 countries worldwide. 4-H has opportunities for youth ages 5-18. It offers more than 200 projects and activities to choose from. 4-H is everywhere -- towns, cities, farms, suburbs, schools, churches, homes, and communities -- but most of all 4-H is fun. At 4-H day camps, youth can experience just how much fun 4-H really is."
A registration packet can be picked up at the office of the N.C. Cooperative Extension, 39 Peachtree Street, Murphy, NC. The deadline for registering for all local 4-H day camps is Friday, June 3. Early registration is suggested because space is limited.

New Boating Law: Personal Floatation Devices Required -- North Carolina
Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, May 30 2005 at 6:29 PM
(Context Tag: North Carolina) The N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission announced a new law regarding children and boating.
The new law requires children under the age of 13 to wear a U. S. Coast Guard approved personal floatation device of the proper size while boating.
The law adds that they must wear the floatation device if the boat is under way, not anchored or tied up.
The only exceptions are for children who are below deck or inside an enclosed cabin.
North Carolina Wildlife Enforcement officers will be issuing citations on all public waterways for boaters violating the law.
"The intent of this law is to reduce the number of children who drown each year because they were not wearing a PFD," wildlife officer Tim Lominac said.

(Context Tag: western North Carolina) Every day in the 30th Judicial District, a child is abused or neglected in one form or another.
For that child, the world is often a dark place, and the innocence of childhood is shattered.
Concerned citizens often ask what they can do to help the community and children in it, and what impact they can make.
The answer is that everyone can make a difference.
The Guardian ad Litem program is searching for special people who are willing to give their time and talents to help the life of a child.
With an ever-increasing number of children entering foster care due to abuse or neglect, there is a need for additional volunteers in the 30th Judicial District, which includes the counties of Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, and Swain, and includes the Qualla Boundary. No special experience or education is necessary.
All that is needed is an interest in children, be a responsible adult ages 18 or older and pass a criminal background check.
A commitment of 15-29 hours per month is usually the time required.
Flexible group training programs will start in Murphy on Tuesday, May 10, 2005.
Call Mary May, district administrator at the Guardian ad Litem office in Murphy, at 828-837-8003 or 828-321-4056 for more information.

(Context Tag: Brasstown NC) John C. Campbell Folk School will offer 14 classes celebrating the history and creativity of the Appalachian region from Sunday, May 29, 2005, through Saturday, June 4, 2005.
Coinciding with the Folk School's Appalachian Heritage Week is its inclusion in National Geographic's Map Guide to Appalachia. Released in the April edition of National Geographic and on the National Geographic website, the interactive map of Appalachia was developed with the Appalachian Regional Commission and features notable sites in the 13 states comprising the Appalachian region.
"The folk school is right in the middle of National Geographic's first tourist map, celebrating Appalachia's creativity and history," said Jan Davidson, folk school director. "John C. Campbell was one of the creators of the concept of 'Appalachia' as a distinctive American region. He and his wife, Olive, one of our founders, drew the first map of the region early in the 20th century."
Program Manager Karen Beaty said the classes offered during the Appalachian Heritage Week are diverse and interesting.
"A student can come to the folk school and in one week learn to build a ladderback chair or to make some cozy socks," Beaty said. "They can experiment with Appalachian food in a cooking class or explore the rich stories of the area in a storytelling class."
Other classes offered during the week include basketmaking, blacksmithing, broommaking, chair caning and weaving, clogging, making fused glass, dulcimer playing, quilting, weaving, and woodcarving.
In addition to classes on Appalachian craft, cooking, and storytelling, students will receive a rounded experience of Appalachian culture during their stay at the folk school.

(Context Tag: Andrews NC) Debra Pollard, chairperson of the Cherokee County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, announced that Power Partners, a local nonprofit based in Andrews, NC, and serving youth throughout Cherokee County, has been awarded 2005 Youth Endowment funds.
Judy Corn, executive director of Power Partners, told the council the funds will be used to help offset the extended summer vacation students face this summer.
North Carolina's Department of Public Instruction and the General Assembly moved this year to begin next year's school starting date to August 25 in response to public demand.
In the past, public schools began in the first two weeks of summer vacation has thrown many programs into a quandary regarding funding for summer activities, officials said.
Power Partners will use the funds to help offset the added expense of providing services to youth for an additional two weeks, Corn said.
The Cherokee County Youth Endowment was established four years ago to help provide funds for prevention services to youth in Cherokee County.
In the past, the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council has organized and sponsored the Scottish Highland Games to raise funds for the endowment.
The council no longer sponsors the games and is in the process of developing a new fund-raising event for the youth endowment.
The endowment is managed by the North Carolina Community Foundation and currently has a balance approaching $8,000, according to officials.
If you'd like to help, contributions may be made in a number of ways. Checks made out to the Cherokee County Youth Endowment can be sent to the NC Community Foundation, PO Box 2148, Sylva, NC 28779, or, for more information, call Gil Hargett, JCPC administrative assistant, at 828-389-0747

The jazz ensemble will perform two jazz fusion arrangements of "Chameleon," made popular by the Maynard Ferguson Band and Birdland of Weather Report fame.

"When we did the U.S. debut five years ago, I played the pipes with two other pipers from the area. This time, I am going to conduct and let pipers from Chattanooga, Tennessee, do the piping. As a member of the City of Chattanooga Pipe Band, I was able to encourage them to help us out in this performance."
