Mountain Area Dental Clinic Growing In Popularity -- Murphy, NC 28906
Posted by johndilbeck on Wednesday, August 3 2005 at 2:27 AM
(Context Tag: Murphy NC, Cherokee County NC, Mountain Area Dental Clinic)
(Peachtree Community) - Last March, the Truett Baptist Association of Churches began a new ministry called Mountain Area Dental Clinic.
This is a partnership between the Clay County Health Department, Cherokee County NC Department of Health, Truett Baptist Association of Churches, and Murphy Medical Center. The target area for the ministry is Clay, Graham, and Cherokee counties in North Carolina, and the target population is among those who do not have dental insurance.
The Far West Dental Clinic allows Mountain Area Dental Clinic dentists to use their facilities four hours each Friday, and they have already helped nearly 100 clients.
The clinic performs basic dental work, such as pulling and filling teeth, as well as dental education. There is no long-term care provided by the clinic or the dentists themselves.
The clinic is free. However, upon applying for care, a $10 donation is asked to alleviate some of the expenses for dental equipment and utilities.
Since the clinic opened, it has developed two waiting lists. One is for clients with immediate needs, and the other is for those to bee seen as soon as possible. The immediate needs list is for clients who are in constant pain, and the "ASAP" list is for all others. As expected, these lists are growing each week.
There are two major concerns for the clinic. One is the amount of hours that Far West allows the ministry to use its clinic, and the other is the small number of dentists and dental assistants that are available to help.
The clinic's major source of funds was a $7,000 grant from Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. The foundation is a non-profit organization that serves the 18-county mountain region by professionally managing charitable funds created by individuals and families. The foundation uses those funds to make grants to local nonprofit organizations.
Other funds of significance came from the Fred Moss Charity Trust and the Office of Economic Opportunity of Catholic Social Services in Murphy, NC.
In addition to the monetary donations, the Mountain Area Dental Clinic has received confirmation from Henry Schein Cares, an organization that works to provide resources to support the programs of community-based practitioners.
The ministry encourages those in need to come out to the clinic. The only requirement is that the applicant must be within standards of the federal poverty level.
In addition, those who apply will be interviewed to determine what medications they are taking, as well as asking basic health questions. Those approved will be given an appointment time shortly afterwards.
The clinic also accepts monetary donations from the general public. Any donations given would be a charitable tax-deductible donation.
Mountain Area Dental Clinic is in Peachtree on NC 141 near Peachtree Elementary School. Contact the clinic at 828-837-5401 for more information.
