Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, June 11 2005 at 9:49 AM
(Context Tag: Brasstown NC) Jerry and Ray Wilson will perform at the Brasstown Community Civic Center at 7:00 pm on Saturday, June 11, 2005.
The Wilson Brothers have been singing gospel music together since the 1950s, with Ray providing lead vocal and Jerry adding high tenor harmony. They accompany themselves acoustically using mandolin and guitar.
They sing in a style often referred to as the "close duet" or "brother harmony," a style that predates bluegrass and harkens back to groups of the 1920s and 1930s, such as the Blue Sky Boys, Delmore Brothers, and Bailes Brothers.
The Wilsons have traveled extensively throughout the Southeast, sometimes making trips as far as Ohio, to share their music at festivals, benefits, churches, and colleges.
In 1998, they were recognized with the N. C. Folk Heritage Award by the N. C. Council for the Arts.
They released a CD titled Today, If you Will Hear His Voice in 2003. A new CD featuring a compilation of live performances and radio shows done by the brothers will be released this summer on the Stammey Branch label.
Traditional music concerts are heard at the Brasstown Community Civic Center on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, beginning in April and running into October. The box office opens at 6:15 pm with concert time at 7:00 pm.
Admission is $3 for adults, with children ages 12 and under free.
Refreshments available from the kitchen include popcorn, soft drinks, hot dogs, candy, and baked goods.
Jennifer Oakey's Painting Goes to Washington -- Andrews, NC 28901
Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, June 11 2005 at 9:36 AM
(Context Tag: Andrews NC) An Andrews High School sophomore's artwork is hanging in the Washington office of U. S. Representative Charles Taylor (R-NC of Brevard).
Jennifer Oakey's oil pastel painting, "Standing in the Blankness," earned second place in this year's 11th Congressional District Art Contest for high school students. In a May 7, 2005, ceremony at the western North Carolina Arboretum, Oakey received a $200 prize. Her painting will be displayed in Representative Taylor's office for one year.
Oakey, 16, said her work was inspired by a poem she wrote titled, "I Am So Alone." An Art I student, she said this is the first art class she has taken.
Jennifer is the daughter of Sandy and Ed Brooms.
In Concert: Donna Hopkins -- Murphy, NC 28906 -- June 10-11, 2005
Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, June 11 2005 at 9:25 AM
(Context Tag: Murphy NC) Donna Hopkins will be live in concert at Murphy's Blues Revue, behind the Mountain Vista Inn at 78 Terrace Drive.
"In a world where so much of our entertainment is pre-packaged, market-researched, lowest common denominator pseudo-art, Donna Hopkins is a breath of fresh air. Playing music comes naturally to her, which makes sense because she has been doing it all her life. There is a realness about her and her music that is sadly lacking from much of the current music scene. Her voice and guitar are the vessels she uses to express her innermost soul. Donna is one of today's most appealing original artists."
The doors open at 7:30 pm and performances will start at 9:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, June 10-11, 2005.
Private membership is $20 per night, which includes an appetizer buffet.
For more information, call 828-361-8852 or see www.MurphysBluesRevue.com.

Kiffney Griggs Wins 10 Ribbons in District 4-H Horse Show -- Cherokee County, NC
Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, June 10 2005 at 6:24 AM
(Context Tag: Cherokee County NC) Kiffney Griggs, a member of the Cherokee Rider's 4-H Horse Club, competed recently in the West District 4-H Open Youth Horse Show held in Fletcher, NC, at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center. More than 60 youth competed from all over the western part of the state in more than 80 events.
Kiffney took home 10 ribbons, including the reserve champion ribbon in the Games Events. Kiffney loves to barrel race and compete. She is 13 years old and goes to Hiwassee Dam High School. Kiffney is planning to go to the State 4-H Horse Show in Raleigh, NC, in July.
Youth must place at the district level and earn enough points to quality for state, which Kiffney did. Kiffney competed on two horses at the show. She is the president of the Cherokee Rider's 4-H Horse Club. This show is just one of the activities open to the youth of the 4-H.
(See Cherokee County Cooperative Extension Service for more information about 4-H and other programs they offer.)
The Cherokee Rider's 4-H Horse Club also participated in the West District 3 Day Horsemanship Clinic from June 6-8, 2005. This clinic is open to all youth, not just 4-H, to better themselves and their horsemanship abilities. They have a lot of fun, sleeping in the stall next to their horse's stall, meeting other youth including non-4-H-ers, and learning from certified instructors in their chosen disciplines (English or western riding). The Cherokee Rider's 4-H Horse Club is always welcoming new members and is now opening up to youth interested in other livestock animals, not just horses.
So, if you are interested in their activities and would like to learn more about the club, call Shannon Coleman at 828-837-2210 or Jan Griggs at 828-494-5225.
