Love Lights a Tree Celebration -- Andrews, NC 28901 -- December 10, 2005

Honor your loved ones in an extra special way this year, with a Love Light.

A variety of colored lights will adorn the stately pine tree on the grounds of the Andrews Chamber of Commerce at the Andrews Depot.

All monies collected go to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

The lights, which are $5 each, can be purchased in memory of those who have died of cancer, died of other causes, or to honor cancer survivors, those serving in the military, or as a special honor of friends and family members.

Names of those so honored are traditionally listed in the Christmas edition of The Andrews Journal.

There will be an unveiling of Murphy's new 16-foot Christmas tree with lighting, music, and caroling on the square in downtown Murphy, North Carolina at 6:00 pm on Friday, November 18, 2005.

Sweet Adelines will perform along with the children's chorus from The Learning Center with "Santa is the Man."

The event is sponsored by the Town of Murphy, Businesswomen of Murphy, and Cherokee Scout. Pick up extra copies of the Cherokee Scout's "Homes for the Holidays" for the words to the carols.

Refreshments will be available.

There will be fun, food, music, and details on what it will take to keep peers tobacco-free.

July 4th Celebration -- Murphy, NC 28906 -- July 4, 2005

(Context Tag: Murphy NC) The Cherokee County NC Recreation Department is ramping up the activities for this year's July 4th celebration to be held at Konehete Park in Murphy, NC on Monday, July 4, 2005.

Events will take place all day long and will include a horseshoe tournament at 10:00 am, peanut drop with cash prizes at noon, an egg toss on field number 2 at 1:30 pm and a 3-point and free throw contest in the Rock Gym at 2:30 pm.

There will be a softball tournament beginning at 9:00 am on field number 3.

Recreation Department director Phillip Davis said there will be musical entertainment beginning at 7:00 pm.

The traditional fireworks show will begin about 9:45 pm. There is no charge to enter any event except the softball tournament.

Come and help clean up Cherokee County!

A free barbecue lunch will be provided for all volunteers who help clean up trash in Cherokee County, NC. Lunch will be served at the following sites:

  • Grape Creek Community Center
  • Andrews Community Center
  • Ranger Fire Department
  • Peachtree at Truett Baptist Association


Lunch will be served from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm.

If you plan to participate, please call the North Carolina Cooperative Extension at 828-837-2210 and let them know in which area you plan to work.

Garbage bags and gloves will be provided at each site, listed above.

There will be no landfill fees for household garbage during this cleanup campaign.

On February 21, 2005, Andrews, North Carolina celebrates its Birthday Bash, on the 100th anniversary of the town's founding. The celebration begins at 6:00 pm at the community center in downtown Andrews.

According to Chamber Coordinator Pat Love, the Birthday Bash isn't the only centennial event, but just the first of about 100 events scheduled from now through the fall of 2005.

The American Association for State and Local History is accepting submissions for the 2005 awards program.

The awards recognize exemplary work in the preservation and promotion of history completed by federal, state, regional or local historical societies or agencies. Junior historical societies, individuals and agencies outside of traditional historical agencies also may submit entries.

Awards are given for general excellence, exhibits, public programming, special projects, media or publications, individual achievement, and preservation or restoration projects.

The North Carolina Office of Archives and History coordinates award nominations in North Carolina. Completed nominations are due no later than Tuesday, March 1, 2005.
