Liz Melendez, an independent recording and performing artist, will appear at 7:00 pm Saturday, June 30, 2007, as part of the Live Blues On the Greens series at The Longhouse Restaurant at Cherokee Hills Golf Club.

She will perform two one-hour sets and one 30-minute set during the evening.

In Concert: The Raven Welch Band - Brasstown, NC 28902 - June 23, 2007

The Brasstown Community Civic Center will host one of the hottest bluegrass talents around, when The Raven Welch Band comes to Brasstown, North Carolina, on Saturday, June 23, 2007.

Only 15 years old, Raven Welch is the real deal. She had her first solo in a vacation Bible school program at age 5. By the time she was 12, Welch was performing in community theater. Now, she has her own band that includes some serious bluegrass musicians.

Rhett Davis, who sings bass and plays bass and guitar, is a former member of The Blue Valley Boys and Abigail Moore and Highway 129.

Joe Coffey sings baritone and plays banjo. He started playing banjo at age 12 and has played with many bands over the years, including The Bluegrass Travelers and Abigail Moore and Highway 129.

Terry Collis plays guitar and rounds out the vocals by singing low tenor. He also is one of the original members of The Bluegrass Travelers.

Raven Welch plays mandolin and sings the high lead.

The band will be performing bluegrass and bluegrass gospel.

Traditional music concerts are held at the Brasstown Community Civic Center on the second and fourth Saturdays of warm weather months.

Admission is $4 for adults, with children ages 12 and under free.

Audiences can enjoy the air-conditioned comfort and have a hot dog, soft drink, or dessert.

Show time is 7:00 pm, with the box office opening around 6:30 pm.

Clay Logan and the folks in Brasstown do their best to provide good family entertainment at a reasonable price.

The Brasstown Community Civic Center is located at 255 Settawig Road in
Brasstown, North Carolina, just south of Cherokee County.

Steve Hickman and John Devine are well-known performers from King George, Virginia and Berkely Springs, West Virginia respectively who have served as staff musicians for a number of Folk School music and dance programs over the years.

Steve Hickman has toured with numerous bands singing and playing fiddle and harmonica for more than twenty years. He is especially well-known for his mastery of the art of "hambone" or body percussion.

John Devine specializes in contemporary folk songs as well as standards from the 1930's and 1940's.

Together, Hickman and Devine play a wide variety of country, folk, bluegrass, Irish, swing and traditional old time music.

The concert will be in the festival barn. Those attending are urged to park near Keith House or the dining hall and to walk to the barn where there will be only a limited number of handicapped parking spaces available.

In the barn, there is hay bale seating, so audience members may wish to bring a lawn chair for comfort.

JuBELLation Handbell Choir Presents Free Concert - Murphy, NC 28906 - June 21, 2007

JuBELLation, a youth handbell choir from Portland, Oregon, will perform in a free concert Thursday, June 21, 2007, at St. William Catholic Church in Murphy, North Carolina.

Karin McDonough, musical director, said, "With its sound and energy, JuBELLation is prepared to take its audience on a remarkable musical journey."

The group will perform music written specifically for handbell choirs as well as arrangements of familiar tunes.

JuBELLation formed at First United Methodist Church in Portland in 1998, and, nine years later, many of the ringers in the group will graduate this year from high school. In celebration of this passage, the handbell choir is touring in North Carolina and Tennessee on their way to a handbell festival in Chattanooga.

Brasstown Ringers and Mountain Area Performing Arts Association are local sponsors of the event.

The concert will begin at 7:30 pm Thursday, June 21, 2007, at St. William Catholic Church on Andrews Road in Murphy.

Admission is free and no reservations are required.

A free-will offering will be taken to defray the costs of the tour.

David Anderson, a native of Brasstown, plays guitar and sings a wide variety of folk and country songs. He was featured in the Folk School’s award winning Mountain Valley Music collection both as a solo artist and with The Three Shades of Bluegrass.

Hunt Smith settled in Brasstown a few years ago and has sung and played guitar and mandolin for years in clubs and coffee houses and at the Folk School's Fall Festival.

David and Hunt have been playing together informally for several years, but this will be a rare public concert by these two talented musicians.

Brasstown Summer Concert - The Valley River Trio - Brasstown, NC 28902 - June 9, 2007

The Valley River Trio will perform bluegrass and gospel music Saturday, June 9, 2007, in the Brasstown Community Civic Center as part of its summer concert series.

Sonny Reighard will perform with Margaret Reighard and Jeannean Wilson.

Traditional music concerts are held in the Brasstown Community Civic Center on most second and fourth Saturdays of the warm weather months.

Admission is $4 per adult, with children ages 12 and under admitted free.

The box office opens about 6:30 pm, with concerts starting at 7:00 pm.

Since air conditioning was added last year, the venue is more attractive to audiences and performers.

Refreshments will be available before the concert and during intermission.

The center is on Settawig Road.

Quality traditional entertainment in a family-friendly, affordable venue is the hallmark of this summer concert series.

Musicians from across the state will again share the stage with the North Carolina Symphony in Capital Bank Blue Skies and Red Earth, a celebration that showcases the richness of traditional music of North Carolina, in performances in Asheville, Cullowhee, Hickory, Murphy, and Rutherfordton.

The local concert will start at 7:30 pm on Thursday, May 24, 2007, in Enloe Hall at Tri-County Community College on US 64 East.

Blue Skies and Red Earth was conceived, in part, to celebrate the orchestra's 75th anniversary.

Bear Ridge Mall will celebrate its Grand Opening on Saturday, June 16, 2007.

Bear Ridge Mall is located in Andrews, NC, just off US 19/174 at the site of the former Hillbilly Mall.

John Hensley, of Goldhorse Entertainment, which is in charge of activities at the mall, is planning a Battle of the Bluegrass Bands for the grand opening.

Admission is free and there is no entry fee.

Hensley is booking bands, and prizes will be awarded. First place is $1,000, second place is $500, and third place is $250. The winner also will have the opportunity to open for a major act later this year or next year.

"Slots are filling up fast, so sign up your band now," said Hensley.

There will be 20 acts competing and each one will play two songs in the competition.

The Brasstown Ringers handbell choir, in its 14th year of existence, will present its 13th annual Christmas series of concerts in December.

This year's events are:

  • Friday, December 9, 2005, 7:30 pm, John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC.

  • Saturday, December 10, 2005, 7:00 pm, historic courthouse in Blue Ridge, GA.

  • Sunday, December 11, 2005, 7:00 pm, Resurrection Lutheran Church in Franklin, NC

  • Sunday, December 18, 2005, 7:00 pm, Grace Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, GA


Founded in 1992 by Pat and Henry Meinecke, the Brasstown Ringers have grown from a small group of seven ringers to a 14-member ensemble playing six octaves of Schulmerich handbells interwoven with five octaves of Whitechapel bells, five and a half octaves of choir chimes, and various percussion instruments.

This year's program is a mixture of traditional Christmas carols and tunes, some accompanied by piano, some by violins, and some by flute. The local performances will feature the advanced violin students of Glenda Wattenbarger on a rendition of Dona Nobis Pacem and the flute tones of Julie Danek on Away in a Manger.

A special highlight will be a new arrangement, Carols of the Bells, written especially for Brasstown Ringers by resident composer Steve Holcomb.

Members of the Brasstown Ringers are Elaine Bagley, Ida Mae Holcomb, Suzanne Major, and Joan Marble of Murphy, NC; Steve Holcomb of Marble, NC; Janet Thomas of Hayesville, NC; Valerie Garrett of Andrews, NC; Henry and Pat Meinecke of Brasstown, NC; Deborah Burford of Young Harris, GA; Lori and Bruce Brunner of Morgantown, GA; Liza Lawrence of Blue Ridge, GA; and Glenda Wattenbarger of Epworth, GA.

A love offering will be taken at the door of all concerts.

Old time musician Dan Levenson will appear in a free concert at 7:30 pm on Friday, November 4, 2005, at John C. Campbell Folk School.

The public is welcome to enjoy a public exhibition of folk school student crafts from 6:40 pm - 7:00 pm in the Keith House Community Room, where the concert will be held.

The Folk School Craft Shop will be open until 7:30 pm.

Levenson is a banjo-plucking, fiddle-playing, guitar-strumming, clog-dancing, story-telling, devotee of traditional music.

As a coffee house performer in his college days, Levenson developed a passion for traditional music.

After dancing with the Coal Country Cloggers of Pittsburgh and playing with several respected bands, including the Boiled Buzzards, he has become a sought-after teacher and solo performer.

Voted one of the top 10 clawhammer banjo players by Banjo Newsletter readers, Levenson has performed at festivals and dances throughout the United States. Bluegrass Unlimited magazine calls his playing "melodic, meticulous and uncluttered." He has eight recordings including the ground-breaking "New Frontier" (recorded with the duo Blue Rose), which combines the sounds of Appalachian banjo and fiddle with the Chinese yang qin, a traditional hammered dulcimer-like instrument.

Upcoming concert series performers at the folk school include County Farm Bluegrass Band on Friday, November 11, 2005, and the Berea College Bluegrass Band on Friday, December 2, 2005.
