Scheduled trips are made to Asheville, Waynesville, Clyde, Sylva, Franklin, Turtletown, Blairsville GA, Robbinsville, Hayesville, Atlanta GA, Chattanooga TN, Knoxville TN, Gainesville GA, Hendersonville, and airportts. Mayor Bill Hughes Says Traffic Input Wanted -- Murphy, NC 28906

Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, May 30 2005 at 3:12 AM

(This article was originally posted to the site on 04-20-2005 and is being reloaded because the site was hacked. Please be aware that any information in this message may be out of date because of this.)

(Context Tag: Murphy NC) In an article in the April 13, 2005 edition of The Cherokee Scout, written by Luke Manget (lmanget@thecherokeescout.com), the author tells us:

"Town officials are 'disheartened' by the lack of public interest in the proposed downtown traffic design.

"If the public doesn't speak up, Mayor Bill Hughes said, changes might never be made to the existing pattern. 'This is an issue that our constituents need to decide on,' he said. 'I wish more people would tell us about what they want. Before we make a decision, I'm going to have to hear from a lot more people.

"It has been more than a month since what Hughes called 'one of the most important meetings we've had since I became mayor,' in which Scott Cook, a traffic engineer with N. C. Department of Transportation, outlined a plan he believed would help ease downtown's traffic problems. Members of the public were highly encouraged to attend and submit their comments.

"So far Hughes has received just eight written comments..."

"...I'm afraid that people have just learned to put up with it, and they don't feel the need to speak out,' Hughes said. 'They would rather keep it the way it is than take a chance with something they don't know.'..."

"...'Right now, it is still in the exploratory stage. I'm still listening to comments,' Hughes said. 'I want what the people want, and we won't know what the people want until they send in their written comments.'"

Want to help?

Write Mayor Bill Hughes at PO Box 130, Murphy, NC 28906 to give suggestions on downtown parking and traffic.
