Good Shepherd hosts memorial service -- Murphy, NC 28906 -- November 20, 2005

Posted by johndilbeck on Friday, November 18 2005 at 4:09 AM

(Context Tag: Murphy NC, home health care, hospice)

Good Shepherd Home Health & Hospice Agency will host its 14th annual memorial service to remember hospice and home-health patients who have died in the last year.

The service will begin at 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 20, 2005, at Cochran Funeral Home beside Murphy Medical Center in the Peachtree community of Cherokee County, NC.

Friends and families are invited to attend and light a candle in memory of their loved one. A reception, hosted by Cochran's, will immediately follow the service.

November is National Hospice Month, and Good Shepherd officials want to educate the public about the range of choices available when coping with life-limiting illness.

This local educational promotion is a part of a broader national campaign launched by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization reminding people that hospice is not about how you die but it's about how you live. There will be a range of activities across the country throughout November focusing on living life as fully as possible up until the end of life.

Hospice uses an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals and trained volunteers to provide pain-management, symptom control, psychosocial support, and spiritual care to patients and their families coping with life-limiting illness.

The national organization reports that one million patients were served by the nation's 3,300 hospice providers last year. Hospices helped these people live with dignity, comfort, and compassion.

Hospice is a covered benefit under Medicare, Medicaid in most states, and most private insurance plans.

Good Shepherd Hospice is committed to informing the community and local health care professionals about the benefits of hospice and palliative care.

"National Hospice month provides a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of the options of care available," said Towanna Roberts, Good Shepherd's home care manager. "Far too many people will wait until they are facing a health crisis to learn about care options. The best time to learn about end-of-life care is before it becomes a serious issue."

Good Shepherd's Hospice Team can help families understand what hospice is, the services provided and when hospice or palliative care is appropriate.

For more detailed information or to schedule a presentation on Good Shepherd’s services, please contact the agency at 828-389-6311 or 828-321-4113.

(Context Tag: Murphy NC, medicine)

Dr. Brian Mitchell of Peachtree Internal Medicine is training with Dr. Stephen Clements, a cardiologist at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, during November 2005.

There, he will learn how to perform a special procedure called transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). This procedure uses cardiac ultrasound technology through the introduction of an endoscope into the esophagus, and provides visualization of the heart from that view.

This special procedure provides images of cardiovascular abnormalities with superb clarity and resolution, Mitchell said. The semi-invasive procedure is used in selective cases of heart or blood vessel diseases (heart valve infections, prosthetic valve disorders, intracardiac thrombosis, aortic disease).

"I look forward to offering this procedure to patients in our area," Mitchell said. "The high technology used in the process helps provide outstanding images of heart abnormalities without a highly invasive procedure."

Mitchell's patients will be seen by his associates at Peachtree Internal Medicine -- Dr. Jeff Larson, Dr. Leslie Smith, and physician assistant Kelly Hyde -- until he returns in December.

Mitchell will also be in training with Dr. James Mock, gastroenterologist, In Murphy.

Murphy Medical Center officials support Mitchell in his decision to obtain this specialized training and look forward to his return to patient care next month.

Mountain Area Dental Clinic Growing In Popularity -- Murphy, NC 28906

Posted by johndilbeck on Wednesday, August 3 2005 at 2:27 AM

(Context Tag: Murphy NC, Cherokee County NC, Mountain Area Dental Clinic)

(Peachtree Community) - Last March, the Truett Baptist Association of Churches began a new ministry called Mountain Area Dental Clinic.

This is a partnership between the Clay County Health Department, Cherokee County NC Department of Health, Truett Baptist Association of Churches, and Murphy Medical Center. The target area for the ministry is Clay, Graham, and Cherokee counties in North Carolina, and the target population is among those who do not have dental insurance.

The Far West Dental Clinic allows Mountain Area Dental Clinic dentists to use their facilities four hours each Friday, and they have already helped nearly 100 clients.

The clinic performs basic dental work, such as pulling and filling teeth, as well as dental education. There is no long-term care provided by the clinic or the dentists themselves.

The clinic is free. However, upon applying for care, a $10 donation is asked to alleviate some of the expenses for dental equipment and utilities.

Since the clinic opened, it has developed two waiting lists. One is for clients with immediate needs, and the other is for those to bee seen as soon as possible. The immediate needs list is for clients who are in constant pain, and the "ASAP" list is for all others. As expected, these lists are growing each week.

There are two major concerns for the clinic. One is the amount of hours that Far West allows the ministry to use its clinic, and the other is the small number of dentists and dental assistants that are available to help.

The clinic's major source of funds was a $7,000 grant from Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. The foundation is a non-profit organization that serves the 18-county mountain region by professionally managing charitable funds created by individuals and families. The foundation uses those funds to make grants to local nonprofit organizations.

Other funds of significance came from the Fred Moss Charity Trust and the Office of Economic Opportunity of Catholic Social Services in Murphy, NC.

In addition to the monetary donations, the Mountain Area Dental Clinic has received confirmation from Henry Schein Cares, an organization that works to provide resources to support the programs of community-based practitioners.

The ministry encourages those in need to come out to the clinic. The only requirement is that the applicant must be within standards of the federal poverty level.

In addition, those who apply will be interviewed to determine what medications they are taking, as well as asking basic health questions. Those approved will be given an appointment time shortly afterwards.

The clinic also accepts monetary donations from the general public. Any donations given would be a charitable tax-deductible donation.

Mountain Area Dental Clinic is in Peachtree on NC 141 near Peachtree Elementary School. Contact the clinic at 828-837-5401 for more information.
