The Friends of Murphy Public Library held its quarterly meeting and potluck dinner on November 15, 2005, and members found more than one reason to celebrate that evening.
The new parking lot at the library was finished, the Friends of Murphy Public Library cookbooks had just arrived from the printer, and, after only a year and a half in existence, the Friends had just won the prestigious Frances B. Reid Outstanding Friends Group Award.
The parking lot's spaciousness was a luxury for the meeting. Only seven months earlier, the Friends had started raising the $20,000 needed for the parking lot construction. It was accomplished with a dedicated membership, and also with help from artists, craftspeople, and friends all over Cherokee County. The Town of Murphy and Cherokee County matched funds to make it a true community partnership.
Friends' members were able to purchase the new cookbook at the meeting. Spearheaded by Friends' treasurer Kathy Hoyt, the cookbook arrived in time for holiday gift giving. it includes more than 300 tried, true, and unique recipes from members and local cooks.
Special guest Margaret Andrews, board member of Friends of Macon County Library in Franklin, NC, and mountain area director for the state organization Friends of North Carolina Libraries, presented the award at the meeting.
The Frances B. Reid Outstanding Friends Group Award is a statewide honor that carries with it a $100 stipend and plaque. It is awarded annually by the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries to a distinguished Friends group.
Not ready to rest on their laurels, the Friends continue with their "Big Blowout Book Sale," and the Friends' cookbook is available for purchase at the Murphy library.
