4-H Summer Day Camps -- Cherokee County, NC

Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, May 30 2005 at 6:32 PM

(Context Tag: Murphy NC) There will be eight 4-H day camps in Cherokee County this year and youth may attend one or more of them. Each day camp will accept up to 12 youth at different age levels and costs, and they are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Registration for the 2005 4-H summer day camps has begun.

Attendees will learn about some of the things 4-H members do, but they do not have to be, or become, a memeber to attend a day camp.

All day camps are open to youth regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.

Shannon Coleman is Cherokee County's Extension Service 4-H, Family and Consumer Education Assistant Agent, and she says, "4-H is the world's largest youth serving organization with more than 6 million participants nationally. It involves all 50 states and more than 80 countries worldwide. 4-H has opportunities for youth ages 5-18. It offers more than 200 projects and activities to choose from. 4-H is everywhere -- towns, cities, farms, suburbs, schools, churches, homes, and communities -- but most of all 4-H is fun. At 4-H day camps, youth can experience just how much fun 4-H really is."

A registration packet can be picked up at the office of the N.C. Cooperative Extension, 39 Peachtree Street, Murphy, NC. The deadline for registering for all local 4-H day camps is Friday, June 3. Early registration is suggested because space is limited.

Camps, costs and dates:

  • 4-H Summer Fun Day Camp, Unaka Community, June 14-17, 2005, ages 6-12, cost $20
  • Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs, June 20-23 and June 27-29, ages 7-18, cost $35
  • West District 4-H Forestry Day, June 24, ages 9-15, cost $15
  • My Manners Matter, July 12-14, ages 7-18, cost $12
  • My Cherokee County, July 19, ages 5-18, cost $5
  • Horsin' Around, July 21, ages 5-18, cost $5
  • 4-H Summer Fun Day Camp, Hiwassee Dam, July 26-28, ages 6-12, cost $20
  • 4-H Junior Master Gardeners, August 1-5 and August 8-12, ages 9-13, cost $35

For more information, call Shannon Coleman at 828-837-2210.

New Boating Law: Personal Floatation Devices Required -- North Carolina

Posted by johndilbeck on Monday, May 30 2005 at 6:29 PM

(Context Tag: North Carolina) The N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission announced a new law regarding children and boating.

The new law requires children under the age of 13 to wear a U. S. Coast Guard approved personal floatation device of the proper size while boating.

The law adds that they must wear the floatation device if the boat is under way, not anchored or tied up.

The only exceptions are for children who are below deck or inside an enclosed cabin.

North Carolina Wildlife Enforcement officers will be issuing citations on all public waterways for boaters violating the law.

"The intent of this law is to reduce the number of children who drown each year because they were not wearing a PFD," wildlife officer Tim Lominac said.

Phase 2 of the Murphy River Walk was completed last week, extending from the pedestrian bridge at Konehete Park to the Cherokee County Health Department.  Having obtained the necessary clearances from TVA and the Town of Murphy in January, Heritage Partners' project officer Edwin Manchester wasted no time in organizing volunteers and other contributors to complete construction. Phase 2 adds another 900 feet to the River Walk, and features a 10' wide, compacted gravel surface (per environmental specifications).

Special thanks go to project team volunteers Carl Auvil, Lonnie Maize, Rosie and Don Stillwagon, Ernie Wilson for their whirlwind efforts on the project last week. Construction activities were also assisted by the Konehete Park crew as well as county prison labor. The project team appreciated Western Materials' donation of some of the gravel, and the community-spirited cooperation of Kenny Phillips, P&R paving. As a result of Edwin Manchester's leadership and the team effort, Phase 2 has been completed at a fraction of its estimated cost.

Following a master plan completed last year, future phases of The Murphy River Walk will extend the trail along the Valley & Hiwassee Rivers, surrounding the historic town center to the Old L&N Depot complex. Pre-construction and funding activities for Phase 3 are expected to get underway soon. The Murphy River Walk project is sponsored by Heritage Partners of Cherokee County, and stands as a remarkable example of what public and private partnerships can accomplish. Funded by grants, contributions and donated labor and materials, the River Walk has been a welcomed enhancement to the community's recreational facilities and historic town center.
