The Far West Mountain Economic Partners Heritage Tourism group is putting together their first "Far West Visitor's Guide" for the Far Western Counties of North Carolina.

This guide will consist of:

  • Accommodations
  • Things to See and Do
  • Historical Sites and Facts
  • County information for Clay, Cherokee, Graham and Swain counties
  • Information about the Cherokee Qualla Boundary (sometimes called the Cherokee Indian Reservation).

This guide will cover June 2005 through April 2006, and then a yearly publication will be produced.

The Far West group has recently published two Calendar of Events for this region that have been a great success with the visitors.

Visitors love a guide where they can get the regional information in one guide along with a map.

For more information on the Far West Visitor's Guide and/or the organization, contact Debbie Jackson, Heritage Team Leader, at 828-389-3704.

The leaves are starting to change colors!

It always feels like a bonus for living through a hot, humid summer when the leaves begin to change color and the nights begin to cool. Those of us fortunate enough to live here will, once again, enjoy the burst of color on our wonderful mountains.

For the next couple of weeks, or so, the color should peak and lots of visitors will travel through Cherokee County.

We hope you enjoy your visit.

The US Forest Service will open two roads for leaf lookers on October 24 and 31, 2004 during daylight hours. Gates will be closed by 5:00 pm each day.

In Cherokee County: Panther Top Road which leads to the Panther Top fire tower. (Some locals pronounce Panther as paint-her.)

In Clay County: Leatherwood Road in the Fires Creek Section.

"We caution travelers to be careful on these remote, two-lane roads because of the narrow, winding and mountainous terrain," District Ranger R.E. Vann said.

For details, call the Tusquitee Ranger District office at 828-837-5152
