United Way honors community volunteers -- Cherokee County and Clay County, NC

Posted by johndilbeck on Saturday, November 26 2005 at 2:55 AM

(Context Tag: Cherokee County NC, Clay County NC, United Way, volunteers)

More than 40 volunteers from 17 Cherokee County social service agencies were honored recently by the United Way of Cherokee and Clay Counties.

About 90 people attended the volunteer recognition event at First United Methodist Church. The theme was "Volunteers -- the Heart of a Community."

Murphy Mayor Bill Hughes expressed his thanks to volunteers, saying that hundreds of volunteers contribute thousands of hours to helping people in the community and to making this community a good place to live. But it is not just the time they give and the knowledge and skills they share, he said, it is their caring that makes a difference.

Laura Hays, a Special Olympics athlete and 2003-2004 honorary chairperson for United Way's fundraising campaign, also thanked the volunteers.

"Lots of volunteers help with Special Olympics in Cherokee County," she said, "They coach us and drive us places and cheer us on."

Special Olympics has more than 100 local volunteers.

Devin Tant, a 15-year-old Boy Scout who is about to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, is the 2005-2006 honorary chairperson for United Way. He expressed appreciation to the many adults who make Scouting available for youth by volunteering.

Karen Borchers, executive director of the local United Way, pointed out that many of the most vital social service agencies in Cherokee County are entirely volunteer. These include the emergency food pantries, rescue squads, home-delivered meals, and Compassionate Friends.

The service of a number of other agencies are provided almost entirely by volunteers, such as the Guardian ad Litem program, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts.

Borchers said United Way refers volunteers to local agencies.

"We have brochures about volunteering at the chamber and the libraries, and we receive inquiries from newcomers and local agencies and their particular needs," Borchers said.

Many volunteers help with several agencies. Many of those present at the event have volunteered with the same agency for 10 years or more.

The volunteers were presented with "one-of-a-kind" thank-you certificates, colored by children in the Power Partners after-school program in Andrews, NC.

Contributions to United Way are distributed to local agencies to provide services to the needy, children, families, and elderly in Cherokee and Clay counties.

Volunteers honored at the event were:

United Way's fundraising campaign is underway. This year's goal is $56,000. About 60 percent of the goal has been raised. All money raised by United Way of Cherokee and Clay Counties is used locally.

Donors can specify whether they want contributions to be used to help people in Cherokee, Clay, or both counties. They also can specify if they wish their donations to be used in a specific town or for a specific agency.

(Context Tag: western North Carolina) Every day in the 30th Judicial District, a child is abused or neglected in one form or another.

For that child, the world is often a dark place, and the innocence of childhood is shattered.

Concerned citizens often ask what they can do to help the community and children in it, and what impact they can make.

The answer is that everyone can make a difference.

The Guardian ad Litem program is searching for special people who are willing to give their time and talents to help the life of a child.

With an ever-increasing number of children entering foster care due to abuse or neglect, there is a need for additional volunteers in the 30th Judicial District, which includes the counties of Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, and Swain, and includes the Qualla Boundary. No special experience or education is necessary.

All that is needed is an interest in children, be a responsible adult ages 18 or older and pass a criminal background check.

A commitment of 15-29 hours per month is usually the time required.

Flexible group training programs will start in Murphy on Tuesday, May 10, 2005.

Call Mary May, district administrator at the Guardian ad Litem office in Murphy, at 828-837-8003 or 828-321-4056 for more information.
