No shadows please 2 Feb 2010 at 8:04pm One of the Cherokee Scout?s neighbors at its new office on 89 Sycamore St. is a groundhog that lives under the home across the street from the associate?s entrance. Staff Photographer Scott Wallace was able to take several photographs of the groundhog in December. While our nameless groundhog did not poke its head out from under the house on Groundhog Day, we find it highly unlikely it saw its shadow with all the clouds and rain. According to legend, if the groundhog sees its shadow, there will be an early spring. And while we want to believe this, David Hotz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn., said an early spring is not in the forecast for western North Carolina. Hotz predicts a trend toward cooler than normal temperatures for the remainder of winter. Hotz said winter weather should be hanging around the area longer than normal.
